10 of the Most Endangered Animals
The extinction of at least 500 species of animals has been caused by man, most of them in this century. Today there are about 5,000 endangered animals and at least one species dies out every year. The number is rapidly growing, some species becoming endangered without most of us even knowing it. Their value is of utter importance, since they are responsible for a variety of useful medications. The first step towards saving animals is to learn as much as possible about them. So here is a look at some of the most endangered species of animals around the world:
1. Greater Horseshoe Bat - There are fourteen species of bat in Britain and all of them are endangered. 
The greater horseshoe bat is one of the rarest. There are currently 35 recognised maternity and all-year roosts and 369 hibernation sites. Current estimates range between 4,000 and 6,600 individuals. They have also suffered from the use of insecticides (poisonous chemicals sprayed on to crops to kill harmful insects) which have deprived the bats of their insect food.
2. Siberian Tiger - It is highly endangered and there may be fewer than 200 in the wild, probably all in special nature reserves. The are hunted because a poacher can feed his family for a year on the proceeds of just one tiger kill.
3. Loggerhead Turtle - This threatened reptile lives in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the Black Sea and Atlantic
Ocean. The turtle was once intensively hunted for their meat and eggs, but its fat was also used in the cosmetic industry. Many of these animals die annually caught in the fishing nets of crabfishers. In Turkey, hotels have been built right on its breeding sites.
4. White Tailed Fish Eagle - Before man experimented with the use of pheromones, this spectacular bird of prey was much more numerous than it is today. They have also been hunted by shepherds and gamekeepers that considered them a threat to their sheep or birds. With intense conservation actions, the populations in eastern Europe recovered, recovery plans are aimed at colonizing some traditional breeding areas in Europe.
5. Mandarin Duck - This bird can be seen Britain, but its native home is across eastern Asia, in Russia, China, Korea and
Japa. Worldwide population status is unknown, the current Asian population being somewhere under 20,000. Extinction of these beautiful birds is due to mainly loggers, hunters and poachers. Known predators include mink, raccoon dog, otters, polecats, eagle owls and grass snakes.
6. Lion-Tailed Macaque - These animals live in several areas in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Many of India’s 
tropical forests, the monkey’s natural habitat, have been cleared and replaced with tea and coffee plantations. As with so many mammals, currently the main threat in the wild is destruction of their habitat. Poachers have also captured baby macaques, often killing their parents in the process, for illegal export to collectors. They are considered to be the most endangered monkey, with only 400 individuals left in the wild. They are hunted for their flesh and fur.
7. Jackass Penguin - Once the most common sea-bird in in South Africa, the jackass penguin is the only penguin to be
found in Africa. Because they live so far north, and in a relatively accessible region, African penguins have been particularly vulnerable to human depredation. Considering the decline in food supplies, seals now prey on the penguins instead. Oil pollution also threatens them, as does the taking of their eggs for food.
8. Mountain Gorilla - The Virunga volcanoes region in eastern Zaire, Rwanda and Uganda is the only
home of the highly endangered mountain gorilla. They are frequently killed by traps and snares intended for other animals, face habitat loss and are vulnerable to many of the same diseases as humans. It depends on dense forests for survival and these are steadily being cut down to make way for crop growing and livestock grazing. Humans and gorillas are 98% genetically identical so they are also exposed to human disease. This is the most endangered of the gorilla subspecies, only about 700 mountain gorillas remain in the wild.
9. Numbat - They inhabit woodlands in Western Australia, this is the only state in which they are found in the wild. 
The numbat is now extinct throughout much of its range. It survives in the wild only in a small area in the southwest corner of Australia. When man introduced predatory animals such as cats, dogs and foxes, these animals ate many numbats. Their numbers are still declining since many of the areas that constituted their habitats are being cleared for farming and mining.
10. Black Footed Ferret - This is one of the most endangered mammals in North America, an animal on the edge of 
extinction in the wild. Loss of habitat is the primary reason black-footed ferrets remain near the brink of extinction. The remaining prairie dog colonies are small and fragmented, separated by great expanses of cropland and human development. By the year 2010, biologists hope to have 1500 ferrets established in the wild, with no fewer than 30 breeding adults in each population.

I’m very sad to say that we’re loosing our animals. I can’t believe that most of the people on this earth don’t care about them AT ALL. Although I am VERY, VERY glad that LOTS of people are starting to realize whats really going on. I think that People and animals are the exact same thing. They really are actually. Infact I believe that people should be treated the same way animals are every day. When someone kills an endangered animal they should be killed too!!!!!! Instead of having to pay money or go to jail. That way they mite not try to kill any animals anymore. Well I know that not only I can change the world but I will try,and I hope that everyone that reads this will help me. And DO NOT be scared to try.

Rhinos are so beautiful. There’s really only 40 Javan Rhinos left?! For lack of a better word, that SUCKS!
If you think about it, that’s not quite as bad as it could be. They’re still around; if researchers can find out how to get them to breed and if the general populace gets some sense knocked into them and realizes that other animals besides themselves matter to their own survival (small chance, unfortunately), the Javan Rhinos may live. Such a thing hasn’t really happened yet, but maybe eventually…

i eat meat. but unlike many people i Honor the animals that i eat. people that like meat should like animals. no animals, no meat. and also if you really think about it people and animals are more alike than it seems.think about it. wolves work in packs like people work in teams. several kinds of birds mate for life like people marry. orca teach their young to hunt first by showing then by involving. heck ive seen parrots that can solve puzzles faster than people. in my opinion, people that say they “hate animals” are just afraid of stuf they dont know about. and those who say animals are lesser beings than people are ignorant and are the equals ofany one that discriminates against race, sexuality or any thing else that makes any one different.it is this kind of person that i despise and pity, that i look down apon. after all. their only blind from fear of what they dont understand and its their loss and fault for it. you can say otherwise, but it will take a lot for someone to prove otherwise. if i ever fine anyone hurting an animal, they have to go through me first, the only time i would ever lay hands on an animal are when they are suffering and need to be put out of their pain and misery. it must be done swiftly and painlessly. remember, pound for pound we are the weakest animals on earth. and for those that say “humans are not animals” i think you need a reality check.

Omg, did you all know that there are supposedly only 20 Indochinese Tigers left in the world? While it is a fact that there are under 1000 Giant Pandas left in the world. People who poach and do stuff to kill animals, THEY ARE ALL *$#CHES. And it is a fact. Polar Bears are dyeing out because all the ice is melting. We can do something about it though. For once, instead of watching tv, or playing videogames, or getting on the computer, read a book, or go outside, do something constructive. It will help us all, and the animals, especially the penguins and polar bears. Another thing we can do is don’t use products tested on animals. Makeup is a BIG one, shampoo, lotion, soap, toothpaste, they are all things that may be tested on animals. VO5 is a shampoo you could use, it is not tested on animals, and Tom’s toothpaste, it works too. No matter what other people say or think, you should always remember,

Animals,wow. Many are not harmful, and for some reason people like to ruin their homes, or kill them. What for, well I don’t know. To me, I dont understand. I am glad that if people try to harm animals, now they could be sent to jail for it. There is no reason why animals should have their home ruined, for no reason. Would you like if someone came and knocked down your home, NO, so why do it to our innocent animals. The next time you hear about an animal being killed, harmed or going to have their home ruined, stand up and try to do something about it. We would be able to save our ANIMALS!!!

I think that hunting innocent big cats, wolves and many other creatures is unfair and ridiculas.And cutting down trees in the rainforests were most of these exquisite, fasenating creatures live is insane.I think poaching and hunting of animals should stop immedeately!

I reallt love animals and nature. I agree with all that is being done to save the animals, but hardly beleive that it is enough. More needs to be done, and I think that getting the word out will help. That is why I would like to thatnk the manager of this site for such a clean site for information. Pick an animal you are passionate about, preferably the most endangered one because they need more help quicker than the ones on the list who have more time. you can’t save everything at the same time but there are easy ways to help. you can donate… or you can make an IMPACT. try hosting a fundraise or boycott something (like fur coats). more importantly, use your brain, you can come up with something to save our planet that others can’t just because you’re one of a kind. so get involved and before you take an action contact someone who knows what they’re talking about and get ALL the facts.

Animals arent supposed to die because some jackasses are hungry or because they dont know what to do with their great deal of money. These creatures exist because they have a role, even if we humans dont know about them. They arent supposed to die, because we need paper ( go recycling ) either.

the thing that some arent understanding, mainly the immature folks on here, is that these arent the animals that we are eating. so many comments have been left on here stating that its just the way of nature that they are going extinct because they are getting eaten. thats not the case. the main reasons are due to big corporations that destroy habitats for profit, which we should really revolt against because it hurts our pockets and livlyhoods too, and they are left with no where to go. the other reason is fear. a lot of animals are killed because we fear them so we kill them which makes no sense because other humans are what we should be afraid of. your best friend will betray you given the chance for personal gain. instead of being afraid of a snake and we kill it, what about the guy down the street who would steal from you to buy drugs?

Thank you for posting. Though these are just animals, they are very important to our existence. And they die not because of natural causes but because of human intervention. Animals could adapt to the changing environment, but they couldn’t if the change is so drastic (and drastic changes are caused by us). Let’s do our share in preserving whatever living thing we have on earth. We don’t want to be alone, do we?
