The pearl farms are best located in sheltered areas with active tides that feed the oysters and few water pollution. The pearls are harvested during the months of June and September. Omg somebody call peta! All those poor oysters.
forget peta, i’d much rather have pearl strands around my neck than live oysters.

The description is referring to the way South Sea pearl oysters are collected in Australia. This is the only pearl farming area that continues to use wild catch. All other pearl farms use hatchery shell.
The pictures are from Chinese freshwater pearl farms most likely in Zhejiang province. They use mussels (hatchery bred), not oysters. The pearls are grown in lakes and man-made bodies of water. The mussels in the photos are Hyriopsis cumingi, the most commonly used freshwater pearl mussel in China.
