The Seal Concentration Camp

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has been waging a war for quite some time now with the seal hunting industry. The Canadian Government insists that the seal hunt is an animal production industry like any others, while animal activists says the levels of suffering present here most than in any other industry cannot be tolerated. According to independent studies 79% of the sealers involved in the study did not check to see if an animal was dead before skinning it. Furthermore, in 40% of the cases, the sealhad had to be struck a second time, because it was still conscious after the first blow. Almost half of the seals were conscious when skinned.

These shots were taken in a Russian city next to the White Sea, Arkhangelsk. With the Fishery Ministry of Norway fueling money into the town’s administration, the sealhunt continues unless the international community reacts. Here are some terrifying images when the seals are captured!

  2. Me and my greenpeace warriors are going to come and skin everyone of those murdering psychopaths…but we will make sure that the fuckers are dead first…we are human.

  3. I am kidding…but I am pissed off. If they were using the pelts for something important it would be different.

  6. What about the millions of Iraqi men, women and children that have been slaughtered in the last 5 years?

I think we need to set our priorities here and vent our outrage on at the very least the discriminant killing of our own species!

  7. @mliving are you aware this is a blog about the environment? about animals?
if you consider those iraqi animals, I guess we can address the issue

  8. I’m sure mliving realises that, Bogdan. That doesn’t mean that the people who read it are somehow physically unable to use their energies on other things.

  10. @mliving: How many more troops do you want to send to Iraq? We already sent hundreds of thousands there to try to stop the killing.

Are you deluded enough to think the americans are causing the deaths? They aren’t, it’s Iraqis that are doing it, and the americans are doing their best to stop them.

    Posted by Ariel | April 22, 2008, 5:25 pm
  11. @Ariel
The deaths ARE a consequence of the American invasion.

It’s so easy for you to say that the Americans are doing the best to stop the deaths because you aren’t the one suffering from an illegal invasion and the consequences that broke out from it. Thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians are suffering, and so are thousands of American families, but it isn’t fair to just invade a country, screw it up and then say “Oh, we are doing what we can, it’s not our fault” when the origin of it all was this invasion.

  14. “According to independent studies…”
    “in 40% of the cases…”
    “Almost half of the seals…”

Stats are useless, unless you cite your sources so they can be verified independently.
    How recent are these pictures?
Precise locations of where they were taken are not listed, nor are there any descriptions as to what is being seen (looks like a farm to me).

If there were no demand for these products, would the seal hunt end tomorrow? No.

What about the cod stocks that the seals deplete? Compound that with the illegal fishing of cod by European and Scandanavian fishing trawlers, and millions of people would have no income.
    No income means no food.

If the seals depleted the cod stocks, they would starve due to overpopulation.

The seal hunt is a lightning rod for Environmental Groups to collect funds. I find it interesting that this is being ramped up again so close to tax time.

Oh wait, it IS tax time.
    Deductible donations anyone?

Send them along to these groups we have never heard from before, and never hear from or about them again.

  15. Waa.. Poor seals. There are many more human concerns to be worried about than these silly creatures. Focus on global warming instead or we lose both.

  16. This has been going on for many years! I don’t think we will ever stop it because of the greed of man! My heart goes out to these poor creatures who cannot defend themselves!

  17. Poor innocent seals.
Poor Iraqi innocent people (not Bath party butchers and imported fighters).
Poor American soldiers and their families.
Poor we all after global warming threat umbrella.

But, if we are not going to unite about our environmental issues, we are all going to suffer much more…

  19. lambs are preety too but we sloter them each year for easter. i think we can only acuse killing for pleasure, not for food. the manner of killing is an isue too, but the if they are for food it`s only a metter of filosofy, who`s cute and and who`s not.

  20. I don’t really want to talk about the Irakis, of course this is sad too, but what has it got to do with the seals? Nothing.
Sealing is cruel and must end! Go and find another job. Maybe in tourism, that is the go now! We don’t buy the seal fur anyhow. Heart you had a bad winter with sale of seal fur. I hope you croak it soon, sealers.

  21. How about compassion for all sentient beings and a recognition that all life is interdependent, rather than sitting around arguing over whether to save seals or people.

  26. Humans truly are a parasite to the world. We are such barbaric, ignorant ANIMALS. So much for ‘humanity.’

I love how everyone rationalizes how it is ‘ok’ to CLUB barbarically seals to death to ‘cull’ the population.

    Excuses, excuses.

  31. long before there were men to interferre with the natural course of things…mother nature had a balance of predator and prey…for survival not monetary gain…man upsets the balance not nature..This is only more of man’s greed and we should be ashamed.

  32. [...] Rules allowing a six-week window for hunters to target pups after their coats start turning from snow white to gray will be amended to protect all harp seals less than a year old, according Natural Resources Minister Yuri Trutnev, adding that Russia’s harp seal population has dropped by a third in the past decade as thawing Arctic ice shrinks their breeding grounds and hunting takes its toll.
