Black baby jaguar born in Peru

It’s not common that we see endangered animals born in captivity. That is why this event should get some well-deserved attention. The baby jaguar still hasn’t received a name, even though it has been born 2 months ago. The cub is the third born in captivity in Peru and a good reason to visit the country and, implicitly, its zoo. Here’s the little sucka playing with the camera at at the Huachipa zoo in Lima, Monday, May 5, 2008.

  7. Why haven’t they capitalized on this, like they did with Knut (The German Polar Bear cub who raised global awareness on the issue of Climate Change)?

This seems like an ideal situation to raise awareness about our ever-shrinking rain-forests. Give the thing a cute, yet exotic name, make a bunch of “eco-friendly” plush dolls, and pump out a few commercials, hah, alright maybe it’s not THAT easy… but you see where I’m going with this.

It’s amazing how some small, seemingly insignificant cute animal cub, can accomplish more than some people on this planet.

  10. I beleive Mr Garrety has a good idea, the cub a pure delight should be able to invoke sympathetic emotion in oh so many ways. Are you going to follow his progress online for us?
I must admit that Peruvian green issues are not something I have often thought about due mainly to the kazillions of issues that keep us busy in OZ. Great shots and good luck.

  21. someone compared this situation to Knut (the polar bear cub) who is now quite grown: “Is that Knut?” a group of teenagers asked. Told that it was, they looked disappointed, one said, “Oh,” and barely a minute later, they had gone.
