Life in a Lightbulb

You can find life in the tiniest, most remote places. We’re not going to be referring to other planets, but to a very special lightbulb that is home to a small plant. How was this possible? With the proper environment, seeds and proper watering, you’ll have the plant growing in no time. Here is one of the oddest homes for a plant.

  1. I love the idea!!!
Instead of throwing out the old wasteful bulbs (because they have been replaced with energy efficient ones) one could make a cool conversation piece!!

    Fantastic :)

  2. Great idea but I have a small suggestion to do without the cup…

Go get yourself one of those 1300 degree C lighters and melt the part of the bulb you want to be the bottom, then press onto a non-heat-sensitive flat surface to flatten it a bit so it stays up itself. This would obviously have to be done *before* adding the plant! :oP

    Nice little ornament idea!

  3. Does Dunkin’ Donuts allow you to use your own mug?

Might be a little greener than the styrofoam cup.

  4. Hey! Thanks for the great info. I was browsing through a bunch of green websites and blogs and I came across yours and found it very interesting. There are a bunch of others I like too, like the daily green, ecorazzi and earthlab.com. I especially like EarthLab.com’s carbon calculator (http://www.earthlab.com/signupprofile/). I find it really easy to use (it doesn’t make me feel guilty after I take it). Are there any others you would recommend? Can you drop me a link to your favorites (let me know if they are the same as mine).

  13. Ya…does no one see that this is glass that can now easily be broken? And become a hazard..if it gets broken and ground up into the dirt or something?

  14. I’ve been making these for a while now. Bigger wattage bulbs make better enclosures. Cacti are excellent choices for this setup. Water with a dropper. The inside of the bulb gets foggy due to moisture, so viewing may be a problem at times.

How about adding your own light source by a few LEDs?

You can also make your own candles that burn liquid paraffin with a wick.

  16. Interesting art, clever way to recycle.

@ schnuppa: Yeah, since we get to replace our cheap, cost-effective bulbs with expensive ones that not only don’t last as long as they advertise, but are poisonous as well, and risk mercury contamination. That was smart thinking by our amazing government.

  17. great work!

I made an installation once, similar idea but on a larger scale.
    Very prototype, http://www.who-are-we.com/index.php?q=grow-sphere.html

  18. Nice blog you have here! I stumbled across you because of the goats on the green roof story and saw this.

This was an Earth Day project I did last year because it was a beautiful day and I was walking around with my dunkin donuts coffee cursing myself for adding to our landfills. I agree it’d look better without the DD cup but that was part of my inspiration. It turned out to be very difficult to keep the flower alive inside the light bulb but I have moss growing in a similar container and it is thriving.

I *rarely* go to DD anymore and get the small cups if I do. Those are still paper but its always best to bring my own. I haven’t found a coffee shop (if you can call DD that) that won’t let you use your own cup. Thanks for all the nice comments. If you have more questions about this check out: http://tearsoffire.org/twiki/bin/view/Projects/RecycledGreenhouse

@Manbearpig - CF bulbs aren’t as expensive or dangerous as you make them seem. The amount of mercury in them is considerably less than *any* of our pre-RoHS electronics and I’ve never paid more than $0.85 for one (maybe that’s just a Vermont program though). In about 7 yrs I’ve had one burn out. When they do take them back to any store that sells them and they will recycle it for you.
