Molly, The Horse that Could

She is Molly. The young pony was abandoned by her owners when Katrina hit Southern Louisiana. After spending several weeks wondering, she was found and taken to an animal shelter. While there, she was attacked by a pit bull, her front leg becoming infected and needing amputation.

Doctors were impressed how cooperative the pony was during surgery: she allowed people to handle her and shifted her body weight as to protect her leg, almost as she understood what is happening. She recovered amazingly and now serves as an example in shelters, hospitals or anywhere where people need hope. A book featuring Molly has been published to set the example for many other people. The little pony survived the hurricane, an amputation and now she is giving hope to many more.

  7. I think shooting the Pit Bull is over the top! After all it’s doing what comes naturally, biting horses, probable what it’s owner used to do. I think a fair punishment would be to chop one of it’s legs off. You know ‘An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth and a paw for a hoof’

  11. wow what a beautiful horse. How sad that all this had to happen to her. I don’t think we should blame the pitbull, he only did what came naturally to him. But why did the pitbull have access to her? Talking about irresponsible shelter carers!! I wonder what else they are neglecting there??

  12. The story of survival is amazing! The pony’s courage and will to live an inspiration to all but to blame the pit bull is both uneducated and worse than that helping to fuel an already hiddeous portrait of a wonderful, loving and highly intelligent animal. Due to press slanted in this way, pit bulls are dying by the thousands in shelters…the statistics are that only one in six hundred will ever find a home once it hits a shelter.

  13. Thanks for the WOW’s. We think so too. To stupidity p…r…well your name says it all!

The pit bull was a late rescue, had separation anxiety issues and basically went nuts. No, I don’t blame him.
This story is wrong, they were not at a shelter they were home where they had lived together for a month previously. I am sad for what the dog went thru.
