Meet the Mini Pigs

Chris Murray needed 9 years and 24 generations to develop a breeding programme that resulted in the minitature pigs you’ll see below. The smallest pigs the farmer created are the ones below, that are no bigger than your standard tea cup. The pennywell miniature pig is a variant of a rare breed of pig from New Zealand and make excellent pets.

The little pigs caused quite a stir in the media, Chris with his pets being featured all over the European news channels. At 8 weeks old, the little one below weighed just 3kg, or 7lb. Chris said: “He is the smallest we have ever had and is causing quite a stir. He has the crown jewels and we’ll certainly be breeding from him.”

  1. But … is that how big they get? What about health problems? I can’t help but think that if they were dogs or cats, that people would absolutely flip out, no?

  2. Just what the world needs…. another cute animal who will suffer when the Paris Hilton’s of the world get tired of it.

  3. They dont look much smaller that a standard piglet to me. I would like to see an adult

  4. Take a look at dogs already. Theyre variation is due to selective breeding. The only difference between this and dogs is that different breeds of dogs have been established for a while, these are brand new!

I’m not condoning this in anyway. Pigs should’nt exist anyway.

  6. These little pigs are really cute! But I wonder if they have inherant health issues, like some miniture dogs do?

  7. In response to jks, Wikipedia states that they grow as big as cocker spaniels - so somewhere between 15 & 20 inches at the withers. :)

  10. Ok is it just me or is everyone here blind to the first picture? What do these supposedly mini pigs look like they are doing?

Why it kind of looks like they are suckling. And what are they suckling from? It’s not the duckling. Could that be a big old fat regular sized momma pig? At most these porkers may be pot belly pig sized but they are certainly not going to be smaller than a normal potbelly if the mothers size is any indication.

    Gullible folk…..

    FAIL!

  11. Is there a chance to create a mini pig without bones?
It would make life so much easier.
put it in the oven serve it on toast, voila.

  16. I use to show pigs in a county 4-H program. They look like the standard piglet we use to raise. Aren’t they’re any problems, well besides the ethical ones, with the breeding?

  20. Comparing me to Paris Hilton is about the most hilariously inaccurate insult I’ve heard in years. Thank you for making me laugh this early in the day. I hope I can return the favor in the near future.

Lots of zeroes there, mate. One was enough.

Pigs are intelligent animals, very suitable for pets - if one can afford them.

There was this show on Discovery (or NGTV?) about this pet pig - regular size - that saved it’s owner’s life… The guy had a heart attack and the pig realized - so what does the pig do….

Goes lie in the middle of the road, pretending it’s dead, until a car stops, grabs the driver by the sleeve and pulls her inside the house, to show the uncouscious fellow. Devotion, decision making, ruse, you name it - no words, no drawings, no hand gestures, and got the job done. What a job, btw.

Besides primates, pigs are the closest evolutionary relatives we’ve got.

    Thanks for the pics, Pagne.

And br000ce… get 1 life for a change.

  26. I’d love to feel like Fern from Charlotte’s Web and have a pet pig that WOULDN’T grow so big that it’d have to go live on a farm… but considering most people would never consider eating their pets (dogs, cats, horses), maybe this will enlighten people enough to quit eating so much ham and bacon.

  27. they are rather cute, but i do worry about the ethics. i think breeding dogs for their “cuteness factor” isn’t right, and it’s no better if it’s a pig.

i’m not an expert, but if looks are the main factor used for breeding ANY animal, but pigs in this case, of course–doesn’t it seem like the intelligence will be bred right out of it?

the intelligence that is such a strong trait in pigs is the only reason i don’t eat pork. “<< they’re smarter than dogs, and i wouldn’t want one as a pet if they weren’t….

    Thanks

  31. There is no such things. They just breed the runts over and over againg to get the small size. Really, they are just weak pot bellied pigs. I am thinking of buying one. Try looking up Paradise Valley Farm or Best Little Pot Bellied House in Texas

  32. The price range is 350- somewhere around 1,000. These are soooo cute. I’ve wanted one for a long time. I want one so bad. I have a teacup chihuahua and many other pets. I used to own a pig but the house we moved into didn’t alow more than a few pets.

  33. How many pounds do these pigs weigh when they are fully grown?

    Posted by jan | July 31, 2008, 7:17 pm
  34. Obviously the comments about pigs that lay in their own shit while eating garbage didn’t some from anyone who has ever raised pigs.
They are very clean animals, the only reason they coat themselves in mud or water is to cool down, as they don’t sweat. I would love
to find out more…..size at maturity, health issues, etc…..

  35. I used to raise pot-bellied pigs and ours always stayed small with good conformation and health. However, people would buy one, think they knew better than our advice and end up with a huge pig. There is a reason why anything obese is sometimes referred to as a pig. They will eat & eat until they are unable to walk. When someone would ask us how to manage their now huge animal, their pig who now resembled a huge farm animal, we would say what you would say to anyone regarding managing their weight, “You need to consider amounts as well as the kind of food your animal receives”.
Our parents as well as any babies we kept would be tiny. The others were unrecognizable. Beware, they will grow according to the amount they eat. Do not starve, just monitor. People would let the eating of everything in sight, dog & cat food, etc. cause such an out of control problem, that we would get the help me calls constantly. These pocket pigs appear to be another name for pot-bellied pigs, adorable but not without issues.
